Hey, I made a mix cd that doesn’t have dance music on it! My wife, Tanya, is my best friend in the world and she can’t stand my normal diet of house tracks. Lately she has really been into two stations on satellite radio, Garage Rock, and Coffeehouse. With that in consideration I made a mix for her and included only songs I thought she would like. Some I knew she had heard, and some I knew she hadn’t. I didn’t do it on purpose, but it also kinda feels like a musical love letter, but maybe that’s just me. I have been listening to it all morning, and I actually really like it. Please download it, and leave comments too!

I checked out the Best of the Beast show at Commonwealth featuring works of art by Dust La Rock and tunes by Nick Catchdubs. It was a lot of fun to hang out with my friend John Menard and discuss the ups and downs of the lonely dj.

As you can see, I was hanging out with Dust La Rock, Nick Catchdubs, and the one and only Chad Hugo of the Neptunes

Oh yeah, and McShortsington from Whiskerino was hanging out too

Thanks to illusive media for the photos, obviously they were doctored with my godawful paint skills

Made a new mix last night, and I actually had an audience this time. My friend, Erik, hit me up on Skype to video chat right before I started playing. Instead of us ending the conversation, he thought he would just hang out, listen, and watch as I put the mix together. Surprisingly, it was really cool having somebody hang out while I did this, and overall I think it helped the mix out quite a bit. For me, putting these mixes together is really personal, but having people listen and just enjoy the music is really rewarding.
So here it is, this weeks mix: Audience of ONE

Man, I can’t believe he is actually gone. In a way I feel like it is a good thing. These times have been really hard on the world lately, and at the least this gives a lot of people the opportunity to celebrate the unbelievable music he gave us. I was born in 1979, and I remember all those monster hits he gave us in the 80’s, not to mention the stuff that came before that when he was just a kid. All my current musical interests have roots in different subsections of the musical landscape; New Wave, Hip Hop, Classic Rock, R&B, but a big part of that came from Michael Jackson. I remember growing up and trying to teach myself how to dance, all I wanted to do was Break Dance and figure out how to move like MJ. I was talking to my wife about his death last night and more about his music. She grew up totally punk, and has a mild hatred for all things pop. She refers to most things with a danceable harmony as “Gay”(her word for cheesy). The way I put it to her was this, “I don’t care what you thought of Michael Jackson’s music, you could have called it gay and cheesy, but I guarantee if it came on the radio and you were dissin it, your feet were tapping, and a little part of you wanted to get up and dance, and thats just the FACTS!” Anyways, here are some of my fave Michael Jackson moments!

So I downloaded the Sirius XM Premium iPhone App, and it made me want to pit it against the other two apps I have used in the past, Pandora and Last.FM. I have the original iPhone, so I am testing against the Edge network, so the network bar is definitely the lowest possible on the iPhone. I looked at the following categories: Buffering Time, Sound Quality, Content.

Sirius/XM Premium
Buffering Time: 5/5 After selecting a station I barely even noticed the wait time, and never experienced any sort of jutter, or re-buffering period

Sound Quality: 4/5 I actually thought the sound quality was ok, not stellar, and much better for talk radio than for music channels

Content: 5/5 120 channels of Music and Talk Radio minus Howard Stern

Last.FM
Buffering Time: 1/5 This was pretty awful, I didn’t get to even listen to a full song without the app having to wait for a buffering period.

Sound Quality: 5/5 When I did get some music playing, the sound was pretty great, but I guess that goes hand in hand with the buffering issue.

Content: 5/5 Music based on preferences

Pandora
Buffering Time: 4/5 When ever a radio station kicked on, I had to wait a minute or so for the buffering to catch up, but once it got going, everything was fine.

Sound Quality: 4/5 While the sound quality wasn’t as good as Last.FM, it was still better than the Sirius/XM app.

Content: 5/5 Music based on preferences and centered around radio stations you start using a favorite artist

Final Thoughts: 1st Place definitely goes to the XM/Sirius app, mainly because I like to be able to choose between the channels, and I’m a sucker for Talk Radio. Everyone is down on the fact that the Stern channels aren’t included, but to be honest, I could care less. The only times I have listened to Stern, I had to stop after 10 minutes. I am definitely not a prude, but listening to Stern was like listening to Radio Porn, so the lack of hid programming didn’t bother me at all. The only down side is it is not free. I already have a Sirius subscription, but it still costs a few extra bucks each month to use the app.

2nd Place goes to Pandora. The streaming experience was not sub par, even on Edge, the quality of the streamed music was pretty good, and the music selection is always great.

3rd Place goes to the Last.FM app. I was so disappointed by this app. Last.FM is my favorite internet radio station by far, and they totally didn’t deliver the experience over Edge that I was hoping for. If I had done this test with WiFi or even 3G, the results might have been different, but as a developer, I know you should always create software based on the slowest hardware, so that every user has an enjoyable experience, and they just missed the mark on this one.

NOTE: The reason I did my test on the EDGE network, was because I can’t stream internet radio at work, and if you are like me and have the original iPhone, this is the only option.

So every wednesday night now for a bit, I have been able to play with my records again. I have started to make some digital copies of my vinyl. I am still getting the recording settings right, and some of the rips don’t sound as good as they should…this is also making me think my mixer needs to be replaced, which will probably have to wait a bit, even though it is long overdue. I have been basically throwing a bunch of new songs, and some old stuff together to make a mix every week. Some stuff works, some stuff is just awful, but I at least get to hear where things need to change in retrospect. So nuff said, I have two things for everybody:
first my mix Wednesday Night Train Wreck

Track List:
Gary US Bonds - Quarter To Three
Wassup (Bart Bmore mix) - Diplo
Must be a Devil(ft. Marina Vello) - Diplo
Reeling(Calvin Harris remix) - Passion Pit
Floating - Jape
Hold On - Holy Ghost!
Sea within a Sea - The Horrors
Wamp Wamp - A-trak
White Label Remix - Pharrell Williams
Rhythm - Transluscent

And if you can’t suffer through that, check this out, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark, all samples on MPC machines, a total feat of Genius!

So the picture above is from Halloween last year (taken by jsleeper), and up til a few weeks ago, it was the last time I had touched my turntables. And I think the time before that was before my son was born. I finally started finding a couple stolen hours each week to start spinning again. I am so out of practice, and I am remembering how much you really have to train your ears to get everything working again. Last night I put together the mix Robots Taking Over Volume One. Its essentially some of the tracks I have been listening to lately. The genre’s are a bit spread out, from Baile Funk to a bit of Bmore house stuff to some Indie remixes. The mix is a bit rough in places, but the tracklist is alright. I hope you enjoy.
